A companion app for Kompan’s outdoor fitness installations — helping users navigate equipment, access training videos and track their progress across locations worldwide.
The problem
Kompan builds outdoor fitness equipment installed in public spaces around the world. The equipment is excellent. The problem is the moment a first-time visitor walks up to it: they do not know what the station is for, how to use it safely, or how to build a session out of what is in front of them. Great hardware was being under-used for want of two minutes of guidance.
What we built
A companion app that meets the user at the equipment.
- Location-aware navigation of the installation and its stations
- Training videos tied to each individual piece of equipment
- Structured workout programmes built from what is physically available on site
- Progress tracking that follows the user between locations, anywhere in the world
Why it worked
The brief could have been “build a fitness app”. The useful framing was narrower: reduce the distance between a person standing at a machine and knowing what to do with it. Everything in the product serves that, and the features that did not were left out.
The business case behind it
For Kompan, the app is not a revenue line. It is evidence that installations get used — which is exactly the argument a municipality or facility owner needs when deciding whether to buy the next one. Engagement data turns a hardware purchase into a defensible investment.
